Things to watch out for:

  • Being asked for a payment upfront
  • Being told not to contact credit reporting companies yourself
  • Recommendations to create a new credit ID
  • Being advised to supply false information

False information on your loan applications or the use of a false identity could result in your being charged with fraud.
It is your responsibility, irrespective of the fact that you are acting on the advice of someone else.

Don't pay in advance, as companies have been know to take off with your money. Wait until you have evidence of the promised service and can determine its usefulness and whether or not the activities are legal.

You should also never allow a credit repair company to pay your creditors on your behalf. It is unlikely that your money will ever leave their account and this will leave you with increased debt instead of the debt reduction you are aiming for.
Following this course of action can only damage your credit rating and make matters worse for you. It would be better to do nothing at all.

A credit repair company is supposed to help you and everything they do should be seen to be working in your best interests. Do not do anything you feel uncomfortable with, especially if they put pressure on you to take certain steps.

If the credit clean up they are offering sounds just too good to be true, there is a good chance that it is. Credit repair takes time, even for experts and so if you are told you can get instant repair - run!
